Our Work in Correctional Facilities

TTT has been bringing theater to correctional facilities since 1992. We have expanded our engagement to include workshops led by artists before productions, post-show conversations, and months-long writing workshops that culminated in participants creating an original piece. During Covid, we continued our engagement with Ten Thousand Voices and recordings of our programs. Now, in addition to bringing live theater back into correctional facilities, we are excited to announce two new programs!

“Acting for Everyone” at Minnesota Women’s Correctional Facility – Shakopee

This semester-long course, offered through the Scholars Serving Time program at Minnesota State University – Mankato, is led by playwright and educator Kira Obolensky, along with TTT Artist Core members.

In the first unit of the class, co-taught with Regina Marie Williams, the students have learned about approaches to acting. This unit will culminate in student performances of a monologue. With high levels of enthusiasm and participation, we know this is going to be a great semester! Tracey Maloney will teach scene work with Kira next, and George Keller will conclude the class with a residency focused on creating improvised scenes.

“Collaboration, Inspiration, and Imagination” at Minnesota Men’s Correctional Facility – Stillwater

Offered through Metro State University’s Transformation and Reentry Through Education and Community (TREC) program, this semester-long course is taught by actor Marisa B. Tejeda, with TTT Artist Core member Elise Langer assisting.

This is a performance-oriented course to help develop students’ skills in collaboration, imagination, and creation. Through Hamlet, students will learn how to analyze text, speak in heightened language, devise, learn period movement, and develop character. Students will gain knowledge in directing, acting, and the skills it takes to be part of a theater troupe. By the end of this course, students will have created their own version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
